Sergeant Lowhide... The rest of the story
March 11, 2011
Dear friends:
Quite a few people came over to tell me how upset they were about Sergeant Lowhide. They wanted to know what ever happened with him. I never included it in my speech because it wasn’t important to the theme of the Shloshim which was the inspiration from Zevy. I have many, many more pages of fascinating history that Zevy experienced which I did not speak about. Not enough time and I thought what I mentioned would be enough to make the point.
Here is what Zevy had told us is what happened to evil Sergeant Lowhide.
The absolute biggest yichus at the 101st was to be a Ranger. There is nothing more impressive than that. To become a Ranger requires the highest skills. You need to have the highest physical and mental aptitudes. You also have to go to “Ranger school”. It is also a commitment of 6 years and intense training. Zevy by the way was forcibly recruited by both the Rangers and the Seals. They were so impressed with him after the iron man competitions that they forcibly recruited him away from air assault to Rangers. The Rangers are in great need of soldiers and have the right to recruit anyone they want from any other unit.
One day Zevy was handed an envelope with instructions to pack his bag and relocate to the Rangers. He called me on the phone immediately. “Good news and bad news Totty” Zevy said to me on the phone. “I was just forcibly requited by the Rangers”. “That’s good news because that is a tremendous yichus and bad news because they don’t have off on Saturday which means I will not have my Shobbos off anymore.”
I immediately in a panic called Colonel Goldstein. He assured me he would “take care of it”. Boruch Hashem he did and Zevy was told to return to Air Assault. The same thing happened with the Seals.
Sergeant Lowhide applied for Ranger school and was accepted but failed out after just a few weeks. It was a tremendous embarrassment for him. Everyone knew he had failed out. Zevy’s sweet revenge was that this guy who did everything to destroy Zevy had to watch Zevy on the iron man team working and competing with 19 other rangers and Seals who had rejected Lowhide.
I can’t think of anything more painful for Sergeant Lowhide.
In addition, in the end, Sergeant Lowhide was demoted and lost his rank as Sergeant. This had nothing to do with Zevy. It seems that Lowhide was not a very good Sergeant. Zevy told us he was glad that he was not demoted because of him otherwise it would just have been something for Lowhide to blame on the “Jew”.
The ending to this story is so appropriate for Purim time where we are now. Just as Haman thought he had Mordechai beat, things completely turned around on him and he was destroyed. His plan backfired.
In the end Sergeant Lowhide suffered by seeing Zevy succeed and cheered by his entire squad, along with the Rangers who rejected HIM. Sergeant Lowhide, who used his rank to torture Zevy, ended up losing his rank. Zevy who at that time was just a private first class ended up working for and held in the highest regard, for the Sergeant Major!
The point, the focus of course is how Zevy withstood the difficulties he was subjected to by Sergeant Lowhide. But in the end I guess it’s nice to know………. “The rest of the story”.
Sincerely,
Moshe
